Here's the answer, with the number this whole system is built on: BrightLocal's 2026 survey of US consumers found that the share using AI tools for local business recommendations jumped from 6 percent to 45 percent in a single year. ChatGPT leads at 31 percent, 63 percent of AI users trust the recommendations, and the 30-to-44 age band, prime spending years, adopts at 64 percent. Meanwhile the old fundamentals still hold: 97 percent read reviews, 49 percent trust them like a friend's word, and 76 percent of near-me searchers visit a business within a day.
The question changed shape. It used to be a search: med-spa near me. Now it's a conversation: best facial in Beverly Hills that's not a sales pitch. Dentist near Santa Monica who won't upsell veneers. The pattern is place plus service plus a trust qualifier, the fear or hope that decides the choice, and the conversation ends in one or two names.
The machinery underneath didn't change as much as it seems: Google's own local-ranking doc still names three factors, relevance, distance, and prominence, and AI assistants layer conversation on top of substantially the same evidence, profiles, reviews, coverage, consistency. The fundamentals never stopped mattering. They just got a new reader, one that summarizes your reviews out loud and answers with a shortlist of one.
One honest note before any building: AI didn't lower the bar for local businesses. It raised the payoff for the ones already excellent.
