Here's the answer, and it's already happening: the search bar is being replaced by the answer, and the answer doesn't require a click. Google's AI Overviews now reach more than 2 billion monthly users. ChatGPT crossed 900 million weekly users. And Pew Research measured real browsing across 68,879 searches: people clicked a result on just 8 percent of visits with an AI summary versus 15 percent without one. They clicked a source inside the summary on 1 percent.
This isn't just an information story. Adobe measured traffic to US retail sites from generative AI sources up 1,200 percent in eight months, and AI queries average about 23 words against 4 for classic search. People aren't typing keywords anymore. They're describing their situation and asking what to buy.
Which opens the gap that matters: AI probably already knows your brand. Ask it directly and it will describe you accurately enough. But when a buyer asks the category question, best X for Y, what should I use for Z, does the answer name you and recommend you? The distance between those two states is the Primacy Gap™: known, but not chosen. And it's invisible in every analytics dashboard you run, because nothing in your traffic reports shows the recommendation you didn't get.
The window matters too: answers concentrate harder than lists. Page one had ten slots. An answer has one to three, and early answers become default answers.
