Here's the answer: for landing pages, brand refreshes, MVPs, and a standard online store, no. The 2026 build stack is conversational: Claude builds working single-page websites and even AI-powered apps from a description, on every plan including Free. Lovable builds full-stack apps by chat from $25 a month. Replit ships real software from free. Canva handles the visual layer, and Shopify runs commerce from $29 a month. The whole stack for everything runs under $75 a month.
What didn't change is conversion physics. Landing pages still convert at a 6.6 percent median and carts still abandon at 70 percent, for reasons that are design decisions. AI made building cheap, which made judgment the entire differential. The tool ships what you accept, and accepting is the skill.
So train the eye the way you'd train any skill. Start a reference file: ten sites in your niche that feel expensive, with one sentence each on why, the whitespace, the type restraint, the way the page breathes. Then run five questions on everything before it ships: squint, does the important thing still dominate? Cover the logo, is it still recognizably yours? Can you name the page's one job in three words? Does anything break on a phone? And would a stranger understand it in five seconds?
Still hire for complex custom backends and regulated integrations. Never again for the rest.
