The short answer

SEO gets your website ranked in search results.

GEO, generative engine optimization, gets your brand named inside AI answers. You still need both, but they reward different things: SEO rewards pages that match a search, while GEO rewards brands that AI can describe, verify and justify recommending.

What stays the same

The foundations overlap. AI tools still need to read your website, so a fast, crawlable site with clear page titles, a sitemap and no blocked crawlers matters for both. If your SEO basics are broken, your GEO will be too.

What changes

The goalRank on page oneBe named in the answer
What the customer seesTen links to compareOne answer, sometimes three

The biggest shift is the last row. In beauty, editorial sources drive most AI citations. Avenue Z's 2026 beauty report found 63% of citations in ChatGPT beauty answers came from editorial media. Your website alone can't win that.

Why beauty and aesthetics feel it first

These are high-trust purchases. A customer choosing a filler injector, a retinol or a hair tool is taking a risk with their face, body or money, so they ask follow-up questions: is it safe, is it dermatologist backed, is it worth the price? Every follow-up is another chance for AI to drop you and name a competitor. Brands with thin evidence lose at the second or third question, even when they show up in the first.

Where to start

  1. 1. Fix the basics. Make sure AI crawlers can read your site and nothing is blocking them.
  2. 2. Say who you are, consistently. One clear description of your brand, the same on your site, retailers and socials.
  3. 3. Publish the proof. Clinical results, credentials, reviews and named experts, on the page, not in a PDF.
  4. 4. Earn mentions. Get into the editorial roundups, directories and conversations AI already reads.
  5. 5. Measure it. Track whether AI names you, how it describes you, and who it chooses instead.

Questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Search still drives traffic, and AI tools rely on many of the same signals. GEO adds a layer on top: being the brand AI chooses to name.
What's the difference between GEO and AEO?
They describe the same goal. AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) both mean getting your brand into AI-generated answers.
Can I do GEO on my own website only?
You can do part of it. Clear content and structured data help, but most AI citations in beauty come from outside sources, so earned mentions matter.
