What Is a Primacy Score™, and What's a Good One?

The Primacy Score™ is a 0 to 100 measure of how often, and how highly, AI recommends your brand. Here's how it's calculated, what the bands mean and what a good score looks like.

The short answer

A Primacy Score™ is a number from 0 to 100 that shows how often, and how highly, AI recommends your brand when customers ask about your category.

A score of 70 or above is strong. Between 40 and 69, you're being considered but not chosen. Below 40, your visibility is fragile, and AI is mostly recommending someone else.

How it's measured

We ask 25 real buyer questions for your category across five AI tools: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Grok. Every answer is scored on four things:

  • Presence: are you named at all?
  • Accuracy: is what AI says about you correct?
  • Sentiment: is it recommending you, or just mentioning you?
  • Evidence: is it citing sources that support you?

Those scores combine into one number, so you can see your position at a glance and track it over time.

Why one number instead of a dashboard

Most AI visibility tools report mention counts per platform. That's useful data, but it doesn't answer the question a founder actually has: when someone asks AI what to buy, does it choose us?

Being mentioned and being chosen are different. A brand can appear in the first answer, then disappear when the customer asks a follow-up like "which one is dermatologist backed?" We call that drop the Primacy Gap™: the distance between being known by AI and being chosen by it. The Primacy Score™ is built to capture it.

What the bands mean

ScoreBandWhat it usually means
70 to 100StrongAI recommends you by name, with reasons, across most questions
40 to 69ModerateYou're in the consideration set, but competitors win the final recommendation
0 to 39FragileAI rarely names you, or confuses you with someone else

So what's a good score?

It depends on your category and your competitors. A 55 in a crowded category like moisturizers may be excellent. A 55 for a specialist clinic in a small city may mean a competitor is winning questions you should own.

That's why every Diagnostic benchmarks you against the brands AI is choosing instead. The useful question isn't "is my score good?" It's "who's ahead of me, and why?"
