Here's the answer: before paying for a single builder, master the one you already own. An artifact is a working piece of content Claude builds beside the chat: single-page websites in real HTML, interactive calculators and quizzes, and AI-powered apps where visitors to your published link can use Claude's intelligence inside your tool. Publishing is one click, and it's available on every plan, including Free. Setup is one toggle in Settings.
The craft is the brief. Don't ask for a website. Brief it like a designer, five ingredients in one message: the job, one sentence on what the page must accomplish. The kit, your brand's text block pasted in. The structure, sections in order. The content, real copy or notes to draft from. And the constraints: mobile-first, generous whitespace, one accent color. The render lands 80 percent right.
Closing the 20 percent is art direction in words. Resist make it better, because vague feedback produces vague revisions. Give targeted single-change instructions: double the whitespace between sections, make the headline 40 percent larger, the accent red only on the button. Each re-renders in seconds. Save the brief that produced a shipped page and the instructions that worked, because within five builds you'll ship pages in under an hour, and the skill transfers verbatim to every paid builder later.
The honest limits: artifacts are single-page with no custom domain, no database, no checkout. Multi-page sites, real apps, and stores each graduate to their own tool, but every one of those builds should still start here, as the free prototype that settles the design argument before any bill exists.
