AI recommends La Roche-Posay because it has more evidence than you, not because it has better products.
Clinical positioning, dermatologist endorsements and years of editorial coverage give AI dozens of independent reasons to name it. Most independent brands give AI one source: their own website.
The leaderboard is clinical
Three separate studies this year found the same pattern. The 5W Skincare AI Visibility Index found La Roche-Posay and CeraVe dominate AI skincare recommendations, and that mass-market clinical brands vastly outperform premium cosmetic brands on questions about acne, barrier repair and sun protection. Goodie's AI Visibility Index ranked La Roche-Posay first in skincare and cosmetics over the six months to August 2026.
In other words, being expensive, beautiful or beloved on Instagram doesn't earn a recommendation. Being clinically credible does.
AI trusts editors more than brands
The second pattern is where those recommendations come from. Avenue Z's 2026 AIVx Beauty Report analyzed 565 citations in ChatGPT answers about 60 beauty brands and found that 63% came from editorial sources. Allure, Byrdie and dermatologist roundups shape the answer far more than any brand's own product page.
The big clinical brands have spent years in those roundups. Independent brands usually haven't.
What an independent brand can do
You won't outspend L'Oréal. You don't need to. AI answers are specific, and specific questions have room for specific brands.
- 1. Own a narrower question. "Best moisturizer" belongs to the giants. "Best barrier cream for rosacea-prone skin in winter" is open. Pick the questions your product genuinely answers best, and build content around them.
- 2. Make your evidence visible. If you have clinical testing, publish the study, the sample size and the results on the product page, with a permanent link. If a dermatologist formulated or reviewed the product, name them.
- 3. Say it the same way everywhere. Your product claims, ingredients and positioning should match across your site, Sephora or Ulta listings, Amazon and your press kit. Every consistent mention reinforces the same story.
- 4. Get into the roundups. Send product to the editors and dermatologists whose lists AI already cites. A handful of credible mentions does more than a lot of paid posts.
The bottom line
AI isn't choosing the best product. It's choosing the product it can justify recommending. Give it the justification.

Questions
- Why does AI keep recommending the same skincare brands?
- Because those brands have the most consistent clinical and editorial evidence across the sources AI reads. AI favors what it can confirm.
- Can a small skincare brand get recommended by ChatGPT?
- Yes, especially for specific questions about skin concerns, ingredients or skin types, where fewer brands have strong evidence.
- Do clinical studies help with AI visibility?
- They help when they're published clearly, linked permanently and repeated by others. A study buried in a PDF nobody links to won't move much.
